FAQs

smiling curlerWhat equipment is required to curl?

The only equipment that you need to curl is a curling broom, clean running shoes and a slider for one foot. These are available for purchase at the pro shop located at the Centre. The Centre will provide equipment for you to borrow until you purchase your own.  Ensure that you wear loose fitting clothing; jeans restrict your ability to stretch.

I would like to try the game but I don't think my hips/knees will allow me to bend & slide to deliver a rock

We have a growing number of curlers delivering with a delivery stick rather than bending in the hack to deliver a rock, so don’t let that stop you!

How long is a game?

An eight game end usually lasts about 2 hours.

How cold is it on the curling rink?

The average arena temperature at the Centre is about 4C. Most people curl in a light jacket or a heavy sweater.

How am I assigned to a team?

When you register, you are asked with whom you wish to play. Our convenors do an amazing job at keeping spouses/partners together. If you sign up as an individual and have not made any special requests, the convenor will place you on a team based upon your skill level so as to establish an even playing field as best as possible. Some Leagues have new teams drawn up every seven to eight weeks.

What if I join a team and can’t make a game?

It is your responsibility to find a replacement curler and to notify your skip of your pending absence. Read the Spare Policy and the information provided in the Member's Only section for instructions on how to secure a spare player.

What is a Bonspiel?

A Bonspiel is a form of tournament and a fun way to meet individuals outside of your League. Most are Bonspiels are one day events typically held on weekends. Anyone who wishes to curl in a Bonspiel usually has the opportunity to sign up in advance when it is announced -- keep an eye out under the Events section of the website and for posters around the Lounge. Generally an extra entry fee is charged for participation.

Is private instruction available?

Most of our experienced curlers are more than willing to provide help, time permitting. If you have never curled before, our Learn to Curl program runs for 7 weeks and is a great way to learn the game in a fun atmosphere.

Can I rent the building for a private function?

You bet! Check the Calendar for availability as well as the Rental Info section of the website for pricing. Use the Contact Us section to let us know of your interest. We will work together with you to make your function a success. We have hosted many Family Funspiels, Christmas parties, Meetings, Birthday parties, Team Building Activities and Fundraising Events.

Is there much socializing with curlers?

One of the main reasons a lot of people curl is for the social aspect. You will get the opportunity to meet many people who live and work in the Woodstock area. Socializing takes place on the ice and, after games, you can share stories and laughter over a bevy or two.

I signed up for a locker. How do I go about obtaining one?

Locate an empty locker in the change room; place your lock on it and put your name beside the locker # on the sign-up sheet located in the change room. There is an annual fee for the locker rental; a Board Member will conduct periodic checks to ensure that any individual storing their equipment in a locker on a permanent basis has paid the locker dues. Whether you have a locker or not, curlers are expected to change in the change rooms; the Lounge areas are not for changing shoes or storing personal belongings when you are on the ice. All members must vacate their lockers at the end of the season in order for us to conduct repairs/sanitize the lockers

How may I get involved in other aspects of the Centre?

Our Centre relies heavily on the volunteer efforts of our curlers to operate the facility as well as keep our fees low.  Check out My Volunteer Interests under the Member's Only section of the website for a list of available opportunities.
